Biological Desulfurization
Biogas contains methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as its main ingredients. In addition to these main components, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H₂) and trace amounts of other gases may also be present.
Biological Desulfurization is the systems in which sulfur bacteria consume the Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) present in the system and convert it into sulfuric acid in processes where the amount of oxygen is above 2%, or convert it into elemental sulfur in processes where the amount of oxygen is between 0.1% and 1%. Both waste products coming out of the system can be used again as fertilizer or to enrich the fertilizer.
In the removal application, biogas is passed through the tower filled with special filling material. Bacteria clinging to the surfaces inside the tower enable the breakdown of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and oxygen is needed for this reaction. For this reason, oxygen is supplied in a controlled manner within the tower and special nutritional supplements are made to feed the bacteria.
This application and removal process is called Biological Desulfurization or Biological Desulphurization.
It is especially preferred for use in biogas facilities established for electricity generation, garbage, fertilizer, solid waste separation facilities and also in wastewater treatment facilities for odor removal.
In biogas facilities, due to the corrosive effect of the high Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) content in the biogas, the sulfur content of the biogas must be reduced to the appropriate level before being sent to the generators that produce energy.
The high percentage of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) in the biogas content means that the amount of sulfur that will be formed as a result of the reaction will be high and may cause blockages in the fillings inside the tower. In order to prevent this situation, we provide specially designed, high-strength tower fillers that have a higher surface area, high permeability against clogging, and are suitable for cleaning and reuse in order to allow more bacteria to adhere.
Completely imported HDPE (PE-100) plates are used in the manufacturing of desulfurization towers. The designs of the towers are made by us. As Barat Industrial Plastic Engineering, we can manufacture towers up to Ø4000 mm tower diameter in our manufacturing factory. The nutritional supplement preparation tanks, dosing systems, ventilation systems used in the system are manufactured by us, and the tower filling materials, blowers, pH measurement systems, safety valves, differential pressure transmitters, heat exchangers, valves, etc. used in the system. Equipment is also supplied.

Frequently asked Questions
Biological desulfurization is a process that aims to eliminate harmful sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) by biological methods. It is generally used to reduce harmful effects on the environment by biodegrading sulfur gases formed during industrial processes. Below you can find frequently asked questions and answers regarding biological desulfurization.
Biological desulfurization is a process using special microorganisms. These microorganisms metabolize hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds into harmless compounds. Typically, the gas stream is passed through biofiltration media where microorganisms are present. Microorganisms break down sulfur components and release clean gas. This process is more environmentally friendly and requires less energy than chemical desulfurization methods.
The biggest advantage of biological desulfurization is that it is an environmentally friendly process. Unlike chemical methods, biological desulfurization does not require chemical reactants or hazardous wastes. Additionally, energy consumption is low and operational costs are generally lower than chemical methods. Microorganisms are naturally occurring and constantly renewable, so biological desulfurization is a sustainable solution.
Biological desulfurization is widely used in various industries. This method is used to remove hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds in industries such as the oil and gas industry, wastewater treatment plants, food processing plants and power generation plants. In these industries, biological desulfurization ensures environmental harmony by reducing air pollution and protects worker health and safety.
